Protecting the Privacy Rights of Book Challengers
Patrons have a right to privacy in all interactions with their library. This includes book challenges, reconsideration requests, and similar services that libraries provide to their users. It is also important that libraries remain transparent about their processes and comply with laws regarding access to government information.
Unite Against Book Bans: Book Résumés
Across the country, school librarians have been on the intellectual freedom frontlines defending access to books, building understanding about policies and library procedures, and dispelling misinformation. In collaboration with the publishing community, Unite Against Book Bans unveiled a free resource for the community. Author, Please Come! Nevermind. Please Don’t.
Setting aside the fact that it’s just rude, rescinding an author’s invitation to speak because the content of their book is controversial is, in fact, censorship. The physical book may not be off the shelf, but the author’s message is still being stifled. One person is making a choice for the entire school community, that what this author has to say is not of value.
