A Note from Jerry Craft
In October 2021, a local petition to ban books by Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Craft resulted in the postponement of his appearance in front of a Texas school district. Dissenters claim the book teaches critical race theory and therefore should not be taught in schools. The following is Craft’s response to the petition.
A note from Jerry Craft, author of New Kid and Class Act
Many aspects of my life have changed drastically since my book New Kid became the first graphic novel to win the Newbery Medal. But through it all, what has not changed are my goals for my books: helping kids become the kind of readers that I never was; letting kids see themselves on my pages; and showing kids of color as just regular kids.
As an African American boy who grew up in Washington Heights in New York City, I almost never saw kids like me in any of the books assigned to me in school. Books aimed at kids like me seemed to deal only with history or misery. That’s why it has always been important to me to show kids of color as just regular kids, and to create iconic African American characters like Jordan Banks from New Kid. I hope that readers of all ages will see the kindness and understanding that my characters exhibit and emulate those feelings in their day-to-day lives.
When I first set out to write and illustrate New Kid, I knew there would be giant hurdles to overcome. But I was confident that I was the right person to create this book, for the simple reason that I had experienced many of the same things my protagonist Jordan Banks had. I wanted to illustrate the things that kids like me had to face on a daily basis–like teachers confusing you with another kid of color, or classmates being afraid to come to your house because they assume you live in a bad neighborhood. These things are a lot for a kid to deal with. Oh, and you still have to get good grades! To counteract these stressful moments, I added elements such as strong values, loving families, very supportive friends, and plenty of humor.
I would like to offer a special thank you to the many teachers, librarians, students, and parents who love and champion my books. You have changed my life, in the same way that I hope to have changed yours. And to my readers and fans around the world who tell me how much they relate to my characters, I can’t put into words how much your support means to me.
Sincerely,
Jerry Craft

Teaching and learning is an all diversity tool! Banning books will never erase history. This will only surpress what has already been written. Sad.
My children were so disappointed that a small minority of parents had this huge effect over the Author visit at their school. Both of my kids (ages 8 and 9) loved listening to New Kid and Class Act, their reasons being that “learning about others experiences can help them be better friends”. I loved the conversations both these books sparked for our family.
Thank you.
This was a very impactful article for me!
As a retired teacher I strive still for children to have the exposure of real, genuine lives in the books they read. I also hope they take pen or pencil in hand to write, narrate or artistically illustrate a piece of their life story! Embellish their story, use facts to welcome the reader into their story, and leave the reader with the desire to learn more about the backstory!
As a senior citizen now I believe in the talent of our children and they deserve to be heard! We also have the privilege to share our story with them! In my opinion it’s the true Circle of Life! ❤️
New Kid and Class Act are so very popular and when banned, they probably become even more popular. I hope that banning them results in ever more purchasers and readers of these wonderful books. Thanks so much Jerry Craft for creating these wonderful books for our school libraries!!
Thank you for writing books for historically underrepresented kids. We need books that represent all students. I teach 4th graders who practically jump with joy when they see book covers with minority children on the covers. They crave these books. They need these books. As a teacher, I need books that engage my students.
The reaction of a select few hypocritical, angry, selfish people in my district is a humiliation to all of us. Your books are welcomed by most of us. I hope we can run the haters out of our community or at least get them out of our state politics and schools. It’s disheartening and embarrassing. Keep writing. We need more books like yours.
Mr. Craft,
Please know that the ignorant voices of a few, do not represent the embracing arms of the majority. We hope to see you soon in Katy ISD.
I’m sorry Mr Craft. Those small minded parents who signed the petition do not speak for the majority of KatyISD. My kids and I love your work. You are an inspiration to many.
